51 Lost Lives: A Portrait of the Tragic Toll on America’s Nursing Homes

Since the virus took over in March, nursing homes have suffered from major COVID-19 outbreaks, putting high-risk residents at the epicenter, with over 100,000 deaths in long-term care facilities. Nursing home residents are now first in line for the vaccine.

We tell the stories of just 51 of those lives. We share their triumphs, passions, words of wisdom and the everyday routines that made them unique through the lens of those who loved them. Please take the time, if you have it, to read below and honor their memories:

I had the honor of learning and writing about the lives of Ethel Radford (FL), Patsy Hampton (GA), Lois Juanita French Clinton Brewer (MS), Ralph Jones (UT) and Jean Massamore (KY). I also had the honor of working on the timeline for this project and receiving a byline in The Washington Post.
