Profiling an Investigative Reporter

At an old Polish bar and club on the west side of Chicago, David Jackson, then a teenager, loved strumming his classical guitar for an audience. He joined a drummer and a base player for a trio performance, playing tunes from blues to pop. From the tiny scallop-shaped stage, Jackson watched the entire club get up on their feet and spin around to his beat. It fascinated him that it all came from his own fingertips.

While he loved connecting with an audience through his music, his later career shifted gears to make similar connections through his writing.

“Music is an adventure and a collective work, and, in that sense, it’s a lot like journalism,” said Jackson, referring to his later work with fellow colleagues at the Chicago Tribune…
